Remove concrete retaining walls from appx. 100 linear feet of Codornices Creek used by steelhead and rainbow trout; provide naturalized meander, pools, riffles, and refuges; softened banks and shade; and creekside trail in mini-park.
The project's purpose is to improve habitat (particularly for anadromous fish), create open space and an opportunity to enjoy nature adjacent to low-income housing, and lessen flood potential on Codornices Creek, on the Berkeley-Albany border. If the project is not implemented, these things just won't occur. The creek's retaining walls are leaning badly -- one segment has already collapsed, requiring costly emergency repairs. Thus failure to implement the project in timely fashion could lead to serious flooding and impacts to fish populations downstream (if, for example, a collapsing wall blocked flows).
